09.05.2004:Jennie Finch Fastball Earned Olympic Gold and Endorsements

Jennie Finch already is approaching over $1,000,000 in endorsements, but she will not be posing for any photographs. The star pitcher with the 71 mile per hour fastball led the U.S. Olympic Softball team to gold at Athens 2004.

From the Michelle Kaufman article in the Miami Herald:

"Finch, a 23-year-old Californian, has turned down offers to undress for Playboy, Maxim and other magazines. She is a devout Christian, engaged to Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Casey Daigle, and not really interested in being a sex symbol.

"I'd rather not pass judgment on other athletes, but my personal decision would be not to do that," said Finch, always the diplomat. "Muscles on women are beautiful, but I love being a role model for young girls and I have more to lose than gain (by exposing skin)."

09.01.2004:Bjork Video Oceania Olympics Athens 2004

thank you jimgilliam.com for grabbing the bbc telecast:

didn't even know the Olympics started Saturday night, let alone that Bjork was performing. So I tracked down the performance, and provide the video here in Quicktime (56k, 200k), and the audio in MP3 (192k, 5.5MB). This is the BBC broadcast. I heard somewhere that NBC talked over the performance.

08.25.2004:Another Photo of Isinbayeva Olympic Pole Vault Gold

from sportinglife(uk):

Isinbayeva breaks the world record (Getty Images).

ISINBAYEVA SETS WORLD RECORD

"... Isinbayeva broke the pole vault world record with a clearance of 4.91metres as she claimed Olympic gold in the pole vault.

The Russian star fought off a stern, predicted challenge from compatriot and fierce rival Svetlana Feofanova to win.

She had looked in trouble when she failed at 4.70 and 4.75 and at that stage was within one more failure of bowing out.

That would have handed Feofanova gold, but Isinbayeva, who already held the world record at 4.90m, then went over at 4.80m and her rival was unable to respond.

Feofanova, the reigning world champion, was unable to clear 4.85m, a height Isinbayeva did make.

With the pressure off, Isinbayeva then attempted 4.91m which she successfully made, much to the delight of the packed Olympic Stadium."
