Athlete of the day, on trial for murder
LAS VEGAS Fitness queen Kelly Ryan on shemuscle lost a bid to change lawyers before she and bodybuilder husband Craig Titus stand trial in Las Vegas on murder and other charges. The Judge says letting Ryan hire a lawyer from the same firm representing Titus could pose a conflict of interest and lead to an appeal later. The pair are due for trial in April in the slaying of live-in assistant Melissa James. Her body was found in the trunk of Ryan's burned-out Jaguar sedan in December 2005. Ryan wanted the judge to let her hire Michael Cristalli -- whose partner Marc Saggese is representing Titus. The two lawyers say they want to put on a joint defense that would prevent Titus and Ryan from having to testify against each other. They say they'll appeal to the Nevada Supreme Court. Meanwhile, Ryan's current lawyer -- Greg Denue -- says he's going to be off the case soon anyway. He says he plans to withdraw because Ryan lacks faith in him.
In a court appearance Tuesday, Titus appeared to be overcome by emotion while lawyers argued over who would represent Ryan, his wife, during the upcoming trial.
Throughout the hearing, Titus dabbed his eyes with a tissue and appeared to be crying.
Las Vegas police link hit-man liaison to Titus through jail calls
Las Vegas police are linking two taped phone calls bodybuilder Craig Titus had from jail about a book publishing deal to an alleged plot to murder three witnesses that were to testify against him. The calls were between Titus and Nelson Brady Junior, who was arrested last week on three charges of solicitation to commit murder. In the calls, Brady says he knows how to keep certain characters from being in the book and Titus agrees. Authorities allege that Brady paid an undercover detective 15-hundred dollars to kill three people expected to testify against Titus and the bodybuilder's fitness champion wife, Kelly Ryan. The couple is to be tried in January on a charge of murder in the death of Melissa James, their 28-year-old personal assistant. link

Craig Titus interview: Denies killing live-in assistant in Las Vegas
[What do you think?] LAS VEGAS (AP) - A bodybuilder accused of killing his live-in personal assistant says he made "poor decisions" the night Melissa James died, but he is not guilty of her murder. "My wife and I are caring people. We are loving people," Craig Titus [photo gallery] told the Las Vegas Review-Journal Wednesday in his first interview since his arrest. "We are not the horrific monsters we've been portrayed as." Titus, 41, and his wife, 33-year-old fitness champion Kelly Ryan, were arrested in December on charges they beat James, put her in the trunk of their Jaguar sedan and set the vehicle on fire in the desert outside Las Vegas. "Kelly and I loved Melissa," Titus said. "She was our friend. She was family. ... She was one of my best friends.
Titus temper tantrum
The court hearing yesterday brought a sharp exchange of words between a prosecutor and defendant Craig Titus -- and a warning from a Clark County District Court judge that she'd have Titus removed from the courtroom if there were any more disruptions.
Dismissal denied for Craig Titus and Kelly Ryan
In the end, the judge denied their requests and set a trial date for January of 2007. Titus and Ryan are charged with kidnapping and murdering their personal assistant, Melissa James.
James' body was found in the trunk of a burned out Jaguar in the desert last year. Gross is accused of helping to set that car on fire.

A lawyer for jailed pro bodybuilder Craig Titus wants a judge to throw out a grand jury indictment charging Titus and his wife with kidnapping and murdering their personal assistant in December. A Clark County District Court judge is due July 13th to hear defense lawyer Richard Schonfeld's claim that prosecutors shouldn't have been allowed to give the grand jury police statements from both Titus and his wife -- Kelly Ryan. The lawyer also maintains that evidence is insufficient to charge Titus and Ryan with kidnapping and conspiring to kill 28-year-old Melissa James.
The grand jury indicted the 41-year-old Titus and 33-year-old Ryan in March -- after prosecutors presented evidence that James was drugged, bound, shocked with a stun gun and strangled before her body was set ablaze in Ryan's abandoned red Jaguar sedan. Titus and Ryan have pleaded not guilty and are being held at Clark County jail pending trial in January. link

Kelly Ryan and Craig Titus denied bail pending trial in Vegas slaying

LAS VEGAS (AP) - Bail was denied Tuesday for husband-and-wife professional bodybuilders Craig Titus and Kelly Ryan while they await trial in the slaying of their live-in assistant. Clark County District Court Judge Jackie Glass decided the couple posed a "significant" flight risk, court spokesman Michael Sommermeyer said, and ordered them to remain jailed pending trial Jan. 22, 2007. Lawyers for Titus and Ryan argued that the two former fitness magazine cover stars should go free if prosecutors can't say how 28-year-old Melissa James died before her body was found in the trunk of Ryan's torched Jaguar sedan Dec. 14. "The state doesn't have a specific theory," said Titus' lawyer, Richard Schonfeld. "They've alleged five different potential deadly weapons.
