Lysacek upsets Plushenko to win skating gold

World champ gives U.S. first men's Olympic skating title since Boitano

Evan Lysacek celebrates after finishing his free skate performance Thursday.

VANCOUVER, British Columbia - Evan Lysacek put together his best free skate ever and won the men's figure skating gold medal at the Vancouver Olympics on Thursday, upsetting the reigning Olympic champion Evgeni Plushenko.

Lysacek, the reigning world champion, gave the United States its first men's figure skating gold since Brian Boitano at the Calgary Games.

Lysacek was the first performer in the final group, putting together an impressive routine.
