Ghosts of amusement
Saturday, May 2, 2009 at 11:49 Ghosts of the future mingled freely with ghosts of the past on this warm Saturday in April. Walking in the steps of so many visitors for nearly 100 years, Coney Island was alive again on this 75 degree day.
Very few are alive today who took those historic first rides on the Wonder Wheel nearly 80 years ago. It's weblike structure of iron supporting swinging cages were semmingly pushed at will by the many spirits of years ago. This ride scares me, a person who just does not scare easy. It is really intense especially on the swinging car.
The freaks are all gone, but there is promise of future employment to the brave beings who will dare to show off their rare talents or merely be shot at by the drunken beachgoing snipers with a few extra dollars. (Janet has many hidden talents and one of these is her marksmanship at the Coney Island "Shoot The Freak" stand.)
Yes, the ghosts are here at Coney Island. They can be felt everywhere. From the happy ones at Nathan's eating their first hot dog, to the terrified ones falling from the famous Parachute Jump (my favorite glamorous aunt Sylvia, lost her shoe jumping off the Parachute Jump nearly 50 years ago), to the all too real and all too human faces of our bravest on the new Wall of Rememberance where the Cyclone Baseball team plays.
