In truly tragic circumstances Steve Stone, Chief Expeditor of the Olympia Weekend, collapsed and died today during the prejudging section of the women's competition. The cause of death was pulmonary embolism.
Steve, 51, had been Chief Expeditor of the Olympia since 2004 and has performed that same role at all major NPC shows since the early 1990s. A bodybuilder through and through Steve was popular with athletes, officials and press alike. He competed in the NPC in the late '80s through until 1992 and his best showing was winning the light heavyweight division at the 1989 North American Championships. During the '90s he was co-host with Tom Terwilliger on Fox Sports long-running bodybuilding program MuscleSport USA.
Tonight NPC New York Chairman Steve Weinberger will ask the Friday night crowd for a minute's silence in remembrance of Steve. I have known Steve since 1992, and like everyone who ever met him found him to be as regular a guy as one could meet. A shadow now hangs over the Olympia but Steve would be the first to say, "The show must go on." It will Steve, but it's going to be hard, very hard.
On behalf of the whole bodybuilding community we extend our sincere condolences to Steve's wife Andrea (who is an IFBB and NPC statistician) and the whole Stone family.

Steve Stone has seen many of us grow from our first competition, to the present. In this respect, I can say I have known Steve for 21 years. He has seen me in my bodybuilding infancy and has supported me, and many other athletes over a span of decades. If you had any problems at the shows, you knew you could go to Steve. You wouldn't even have to ask. Steve would greet you with a hug and a kiss, and the next words out of his mouth were, "Whatever you need Heather, just let me know, you have my cell number if you need to reach me." I have seen people (including myself) arrive late for a competition, and Steve would work his magic to ensure you were able to compete in the show. He would calm you down, and just work his magic.
The fans have no idea how much energy and effort Steve put into the way a show was run. He would be stressing out, but as soon as he saw you, he would give a quick kiss on the cheek, say hello and he was gone to take care of whatever catastrophe was unfolding. The fans never knew because he was so good at what he did. The shows always ran smoothly and the show always went on. That was a man that was a consummate professional, an athlete like us, and an amazing human being. He will truly be missed. There is so much more I can say about Steve Stone, but I will stop here as I am afraid my tears will short out my laptop. God rest his soul. May He bless Steve's family, and give us all peace as we try to make it through this difficult time. We love you Steve.
Always (even in death),
Heather Foster
