Wide Awake - The Movie
Monday, May 21, 2007 at 13:08 It's raining. I rush out the door and head into the city for a premier of an independent movie at Lincoln Center entitled "Wide Awake" (Portrait Of An Artist As Insomniac).
Arrived on Lori time a few minutes late. Not a seat left except for the first row. I hate sitting in the the first row. I usually sit in the last row. I sat almost lying down during the entire film. Insomnia. I am very familiar with it as you regular blog readers are well aware. Funny thing is this movie almost put me to sleep. It will show on HBO May 22 and 23 and I have to get a copy of it. I may have found the cure to my insomnia.
[BELOW: Getting a back rub sometimes helps me relax. Does not help me enough to get to sleep]
Insomnia is not always a bad thing. People with insomnia, including myself, are often very creative during the very late hours of the night and into the next day. I simply work better at night. It was a relief to see another person who thrives on this restless mind.
["Wide Awake" is Alan Berliner's uniquely personal tour through his life-long obsession with insomnia. In the sprit of his highly acclaimed experimental documentary films, Berliner uses his own life as a laboratory to confront both the anguish of his sleeplessness and the blessing of the extra time it affords his creative life.] This is pretty much how I feel about having insomnia. It's a good thing some of the time.
Cocktail party after the movie. Wine and cheese of course. Met Alan the film maker and his sleep doctor. I took one of the doctor's cards thinking I may call him one day if I decide that I do not want to be an insomniac anymore.
Went out for sushi after the party and then home. Stayed up very late and worked as usual.
