Montgomery woman builds on her stengths -- literally

Women everywhere are exercising. Gyms are full of women of all shapes and sizes using machines and taking classes. Getting healthy, getting fit, keeping weight down and inches off — it's been all the rage for decades. But for some women, simply working out isn't always enough. They decide to take it a little further, to look for a new challenge or find something different.
Kelli Regan did it. She changed her old routine and found something new. The Montgomery resident became a competitive and award-winning bodybuilder.
Ms. Regan, 44, has been working out for a long time. She first joined a health club at 16, an age when most teens are trying to cut gym class. Like many women, her original workouts centered around cardiovascular equipment — stationary bikes and treadmills — and group classes.
"I would do some weight training on the side," she says, "But I found it to be boring so I didn't do much of it." This was before most people realized that a combination of weight training and cardiovascular exercise is best for all-around health and fitness.
"The world of weight lifting opened up to me when I ended up working in Japan," she explains. She joined a gym in Tokyo, one owned by an American who had been a bodybuilder. "This gym was pretty hard-core, with primarily huge guys really into lifting."
