08.02.05:New John Irving Novel Explores Male Female Wrestling and His Early Sex Life

"But Until I Find You takes a darker turn in its second act, when Jack and Alice return to America. Educated in girls’ schools in Canada and New England, his sexual initiation is early and commonplace. Older girls play with his penis as if it were a toy. Throughout movies, it remains tightly in the grasp of Emma, his best and most enduring friend. Emma’s mother, meanwhile, pulls down her knickers to show him a strategically placed tattoo. Jack loses his virginity when he is 10, taken advantage of by Mrs Machado, his wrestling partner, who is in her 40s. He is confused but continues with the relationship and, throughout his adolescence, remains more attracted to the mothers of certain girlfriends than he is to the girls themselves."

The above is based on Irving's life:

The above is based on Irving's own life:

"“That is as close to my life as I care to come,” says Irving. “I was 11 when I had sex with an older woman – young enough so that I didn’t even know we were having sex. It wasn’t until I was old enough to be having sex on my own initiation that I realised, ‘Oh, this isn’t the first time – this is something that has happened to me before’. Well, I never felt abused or molested – I would never have told anyone I was molested or abused as a child."
