Move over karate, tae kwon do and tae bo. Krav maga is the new self-defence kid on the block, and it's faster, meaner and offers a great cardiovascular workout.
Krav maga is a Hebrew term meaning "contact combat", and it was devised by a young Jewish man named Imi Sde-Or to fight off anti-Semitic gangs in pre-World War II Europe. Since the late 1940s, though, it's been the official self-defence and hand-to-hand combat system of the Israel Defense Forces.
Today, krav maga has been adopted to fit into the civilian world. Taught in Australia for the past two years, it's a reality-based self-defence system for men and women that has been specifically designed to combat a hazard of 21st century life's violence.
