Martial-arts actress sees future in dramatic roles

TORONTO -- Zhang Ziyi can kick your butt, demure and feminine as she appears. So you'd better listen to the Chinese star of the martial-arts epics "Hero," "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" and the soon-to-be-released "House of Flying Daggers" when she says she wants to knock you flat as a dramatic actress.

It's not like she doesn't know how. As a teenager, she made a stunning film debut in "The Road Home" as a young woman whose love for a schoolteacher persevered against seemingly insurmountable social and political roadblocks. In "Purple Butterfly," she portrayed a woman caught between love and duty in Japanese-occupied Shanghai in the 1930s. In "2046," a Cannes competitor this year, she worked for director Wong Kar-Wai in a story about an author trying to write a futuristic novel.

She's currently in rehearsal -- and trying to learn more fluent English -- for the title role in Steven Spielberg's production of "Memoirs of a Geisha," to be directed by Pittsburgher Rob Marshall.
