08.23.2004:Jermey Wariner wins 400 - Sunglasses and all

fromtelegraph.co.uk :

love the telegraph headline:

Wariner races from obscurity to world fame in 44 seconds

The United States scored a clean sweep of the medals in the men's 400 metres last night but there was no doubting the biggest sensation to hit this event since Michael Johnson's retirement.

Jeremy Wariner
Young pretender: Jeremy Wariner claims Johnson Olympic title

His name is Jeremy Wariner and the 20-year-old student from Johnson's former college in Texas became the first white American man to win an Olympic sprint gold medal since Mike Larabee's 400m triumph in 1964.

Wariner cruised through the qualifying rounds and then unleashed the best performance of his short career in the Olympic Stadium.

In a finely paced race, the youngster crossed the line in 44sec dead, a personal best.

Otis Harris pushed him all the way to the line to finish in 44.16sec, while the third American, Derrick Brew, took the bronze medal in 44.42.
