08.23.2004:Japan's Yoshida WIns 55kg Gold Women's Olympic Wrestling
Monday, August 23, 2004 at 13:31 August 23, 2004 - Athens,
Greece -Canada's Tonya Verbeek (Beamsville, ON / Brock University) made history
as she captured a silver medal at the 2004 Olympics at 55kg becoming Canada's
first female wrestler to win an Olympic medal.
In the Gold Medal Match
she dropped a 6-0 decision to the two-time defending world Champion Saori
Yoshida from Japan. Yoshida has now won 16 international events never dropping a
decision outside of Japan.
"We are all very proud of Tonya's outstanding
accomplishments at the Olympics," said Brock University wrestling coach Richard
Deschatelets. "This is a very proud moment for Canadian women's wrestling, Brock
University, and the Niagara Wrestling Club. She personnifies what it takes to be
a true champion at the highest level of competition through her dedication,
commitment and hard work."
