08.18.2004:Katie Couric Wrestling Sara McMann Photo

\

From Gary Abbott and themat.com :

The U.S. Olympic Team in women's wrestling made an appearance on the NBC Today Show, demonstrating wrestling moves and answering questions from hosts Katie Couric and Matt Lauer.

The segment was shown at 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday morning outside of the studio in Rockefeller Center in front of a live audience.

Patricia Miranda (Colorado Springs, Colo./Dave Schultz WC) was interviewed by Katie Couric and Matt Lauer, while her three teammates Tela O'Donnell (Colorado Springs, Colo./Dave Schultz WC), Sara McMann (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) and Toccara Montgomery (Cleveland, Ohio/New York AC) demonstrated wrestling techniques.

Miranda explained some of the history of women's wrestling and details about the team and the goals ahead. While Miranda was talking, the athletes executed some nice technique, including a few nice takedowns and arm spins.

In the crowd were the other members of Women's Team USA who are in New York with the Olympians, serving as training partners at training camp, which is being held at the di Silvestri Wrestling Center on the campus of Staten Island's Monsignor Farrell High School. Many people were carrying USA Wrestling banners and signs supporting the team.

At the end of the segment, Couric decided to give wrestling a try, and in her spiked heels, stood on the center of the mat facing Sara McMann. Quickly, McMann executed a deep double leg takedown, lifting Couric off the mat, and placing her down for a fall in three seconds.

Couric lay flat on the mat, laughing, as the crowd howled.

Seeking Sara!
Sara and I went to school together in NC. I was probably an aquaintance more than a friend. Really close at times, not at others. At one point, though, Sara and her family offered to take me in. Now, after the hype, there is hurt. I can't find her. I know what town her accident took place in, and I can't get a hospital in the area to admit that she is there. I'd like to return the favor that she once extended me. If she needs a place to go, she has one. I know that she was in the process of moving when the accident occurred. I just feel like I NEED to know if she's o.k. Can anyone help? - Anita Hodge

Hi,
Iam from India.I felt very sad that Sara Mcmann lost her bout to her Japanese opponent. At times I felt that Ms. Sara's Nervousness cost the bout.Like wise for her height she should put on more weight and increase HER BODY MASS even if it means competing in a higher body weight.
I'll be glad if the U.S women's wrestling team visits India and see how the Indian women fare against the U.S team
I wish all the best to Sara, and Iam sure in the next Olympics she will definetely win the Gold.Iam also very sorry about what happened to her brother.
Once again I INVITE the U.S women's wrestling team to come to India and test their skills and strength with Indian girls.

Thanking you for your time,
Venkat
