ATHENS - Australian swimmer Jodie Henry set a world record of 53.52 seconds for the women's 100m freestyle at the Athens Olympics on Wednesday.
Henry, 20, sliced 0.14sec off the previous mark of 53.66sec set by her compatriot Libby Lenton at the Australian championships earlier this year.
Henry set the new record in today's semifinals to establish herself as a clear favourite to win tomorrow's final.
"Oh my god, that was nuts," she said.
"My parents are here, my cousins are here, aunts and uncles. It is just so good to do it in front of them. I was surprised with the time, it's just awesome.

Interesting comparison, here are the winning men's 100 freestyle times in the 1964 Olympics:
| 100m Free | Don Schollander, USA | 53.4 | OR |
| Robert McGregor, GBR | 53.5 | ||
| Hans-Joachim Klein, GER | 54.0 |
