06.26.2004: Overall Bodybuilding State Championships Won by 52 Year Old Woman
Saturday, June 26, 2004 at 12:08 From the Journal News:
"When Laurie Sperandio switched careers 20 years ago, she never expected that a part-time job at a local gym would develop into a bodybuilding career.
But last week Sperandio won both the over-40 division and the overall titles at the NBI Women's Natural Bodybuilding State Championships, conducted in Tarrytown.
The event was for bodybuilders who compete naturally, without any supplements or steroids.
"The officials make contestants take lie detector tests to ensure that all competitors are drug-free," said Sperandio, an Irvington resident. "The competition is completely natural and based on health. It's fabulous."
At 52 years old, Sperandio was the oldest woman entered in the competition. Her competitor in the finals for the overall title was 32.
"There is no over-50 age division," said Sperandio. "So I just entered the over-40 instead."
