06.24.2004:Barbecue Waitress Drops 24 Lbs. Wins Bodybuilding Title

Flexing her muscle

courtesey of www.syracuse.com

When Gretchen Altier, 28, of North Syracuse, started working out Feb. 1, she had one goal in mind: Train hard enough to enter the Ironman Classic 2004, a local bodybuilding competition.

So she trained twice a day, six days a week, for the next four months. Her eating regimen changed, too. Four days a week, she consumed 150 to 175 grams of lean protein, 50 grams of carbohydrates and 40 grams of fat. Three days a week she doubled her carbs and cut her fats in half.

It was quite the sacrifice, considering Altier works as a waitress at the Dinosaur Bar-B-Que when she's not training.

On Feb. 1, Altier weighed 173 pounds. On June 5, the day of the annual competition at Henninger High School, she was a muscled 136 pounds.

It turns out she was just the right size for the light-heavyweight division of the Ironman. She walked away with the trophy and a hug from her husband, Joe Altier.
