IT WAS late one Christmas night in Melbourne when Ms Kate Ward, having just left a nightclub, found herself being dragged into a nearby dark alley by a stranger.

The more she struggled, the tighter he held on. But thanks to her year-long self-defence training in Singapore, the 26-year-old managed to put her attacker in a wrist lock, kicking him to the ground before running away.
Increasingly, Singaporean women are enrolling themselves in martial arts programmes, taking up classes which specifically teach self-defence. Mr Robin Leong's Chi' Life Studio in Wheelock Place, for instance, offers defence classes tailored for women.
The Jujitsu Association counts at least eight women among its 60 students. Jujitsu, the samurai form of unarmed combat, is suitable for women because it emphasises fighting on the ground.
